50 dead after air assault on Taliban sites
ISLAMABAD – Pakistani jets bombed suspected Taliban positions yesterday, killing nearly 50 people, most of them guerrillas, in a restive tribal region in the northwest, officials said.
The two attacks targeted a school used by the Taliban as well as a madrasa in the Mamuzai area of the Orakzai Agency, an ethnic Pashtun tribal region where many Taliban fled to escape an army offensive. – (Reuters)
Executions trigger Belarus protest
MINSK – Belarusian human rights activists said yesterday that two convicts were executed last week, triggering protests from European parliamentarians.
The authorities have not confirmed the executions, but human rights sources said prison officials had informed lawyers for Andrei Zhuk and Vasily Yuzepchuk of their execution. – (Reuters)
Saudi prince to face murder trial
LONDON – A Saudi prince accused of murdering an employee in a London hotel has been refused bail by a judge and told he would face trial later in the year.
Saud Bin Abdulaziz Bin Nasir Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (33) is accused of killing Bandar Abdullah Abdulaziz in the third-floor room of the Landmark Hotel in Marylebone, central London, last month. – (Reuters)
