Indian and Pakistani forces also exchanged mortar andmachinegun fire along the border overnight, but there were no reports of injuries or damage, an Indian defence official said.

Police said five rebels were killed as they tried to fleeafter refusing to surrender near the border about 15miles from Jammu, winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir state.

In a second incident, five militants were shot dead afterthey crossed a military ceasefire line in Kupwara districtnorthwest of Srinagar, summer capital of the state.

Elsewhere, four militants, three soldiers and threecivilians were killed in separate incidents across the state, a police spokesman said.

Almost 20 people died in two major raids in Kashmir thisweek - one on pilgrims, another on an army base - butPakistan and India have vowed to continue efforts to improveties after coming close to their third war over the Himalayan region last year.
