A 22-year-old Dublin man has pleaded guilty to the possession of an improvised bomb which was found in a car on the M50 West-Link Toll Bridge.

Martin O'Rourke of Sheepmore Grove, Blanchardstown, Dublin, pleaded guilty at the Special Criminal Court yesterday to knowingly possessing an improvised explosive device on December 8th last.

Mr Justice Paul Butler heard from prosecuting counsel Tom O'Connell SC that Mr O'Rourke was currently serving a sentence on another matter.

He was jailed for two years on December 15th last at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for driving a stolen motorbike dangerously and at speed while being chased by gardaí in Lucan.

He was remanded in continuing custody yesterday for sentence on July 11th next.A large number of his friends and family were in court for the brief hearing.

Ex-ship's officer in High Court action

A retired ship bosun has begun a High Court action aimed at quashing planning permission granted by Cork County Council for a €400 million integrated tourism resort centre near Kinsale, Co Cork.

It is proposed that the centre be built at Preghane, Ballymacus, Kinsale, but Thomas Harding, of Ardbrack Heights, Kinsale, has applied for leave to bring a judicial review challenge to the grant of permission issued on October 17th last.

Polish national held over assault

A Polish man was yesterday remanded in custody in connection with a Dublin city centre assault following which the victim died.

Wojcirch Kuzma (27) of Sackville Court, Blessington Street, Dublin, was charged with assault causing harm.

The victim, Alan Barbour, (27), from Lucan, Dublin, died in Beaumount Hospital from head injuries five days after the attack opposite the GPO on O'Connell Street in the early hours of Sunday morning, June 18th last.

At Dublin District Court Judge Cormac Dunne remanded the accused in custody with consent to bail.

He is to appear again at Cloverhill Court on July 4th next.

Knife attack man awaits sentencing

A man who attacked a then 12-year-old boy after breaking into his home armed with a knife has been remanded in custody by Judge Michael White for sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Laurence Harvey (31) of Kippure Park, Finglas, pleaded guilty to entering the north Dublin house armed with a knife and to assaulting the boy causing him harm on March 13th, 2005.

Farmer on rape charges named

A Wexford farmer who raped a young male over a number of years has been remanded for sentence by Mr Justice Kevin O'Higgins at the Central Criminal Court.

Alan Murphy (40), single, of Kinnagh, Ballycullane pleaded guilty to seven sample counts of oral rape, two of anal rape and nine of sexual assault on dates from 1989 to 1999 in Wexford.

Anthony Sammon SC, prosecuting, said the victim wished to have Mr Murphy named in media reports.
