Washington - The Iowa septuplets were making "significant improvement" in the Methodist Medical Centre, Des Moines, their physician said yesterday.

"They all spent a delightfully quiet night, and each of them has shown some significant improvement," said Dr Robert Shaw, head of the neonatal unit at Blank's Children Hospital.

"We are now in a position to upgrade Kenneth's condition to fair," Dr Shaw said, referring to the oldest of the four boys and three girls who were born on Wednesday by Caesarean section to Ms Bobbi McCaughey (29).
