Tehran - The Iranian cabinet yesterday called on Iranians not to hold rallies or demonstrations in support of Tehran's jailed Mayor Gholamhossein Karbaschi.

Supporters of the mayor, who is considered a close ally of President Mohammad Khatami, reject his detention, on embezzlement charges, as politically motivated. His arrest has brought into the open a clash between conservatives and moderates brewing since Mr Khatami's election.
