Appeal for driver in Cork hit-and-run to contact Garda

Frenchman living in Cork fatally injured in incident on George’s Quay

Gardaí have appealed to the driver of a van to contact them following a hit-and-run incident in Cork city centre on Thursday night in which a young French man was fatally injured.

At about 9.30pm on Thursday, Gabriel Jean Lege (25) was struck by a white van that did not stop on Georges Quay.

Mr Lege, from Olonne-sur-Mer in the Vendee region in western France, was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Mr Lege, who had been in Cork for several years and worked for Apple at its Hollyhill plant, was due to move to a new apartment in the Elysian complex in the city this weekend.

Gardaí are examining CCTV footage of the South Terrace and George’s Quay areas as well as possible routes that the van may have used after the incident.

Supt Barry McPolin of Anglesea Street Garda station said gardaí were anxious to hear from any members of the public who may have seen either the collision or the van leaving the scene. "We have spoken to a number of people who witnessed the collision and we believe there were two occupants in the van which was a white Ford Transit, about 10 years old.

“We have a number of potential routes that the van could have taken, so in that respect we are asking members of the public to assist us in our inquiries,” he said.

“People may have information about the van itself, they may know the whereabouts of the van or they may have information about the driver or the other occupant of the van,” he said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Anglesea Street Garda station on 022-4522000.
