The body of an Irishman who had been missing in Sweden for more than a week was recovered yesterday near the area he was last seen.

Brian Farrell (32), from Culleens, Co Sligo, was last seen on the night of November 10th. His body was recovered yesterday afternoon from the water off Gamla Stan in Stockholm.

A post mortem examination will now be carried out by the Swedish authorities.

A statement from Mr Farrell’s family and his fiancée Lorraine said they wanted to thank the rescue services who recovered his body, Missing People Sweden, his employers at ICDS Construction, his workmates in Stockholm, the Irish Embassy, and the Irish community in Sweden who “supported us at this difficult time”.

“We thank everyone who posted messages of support on social media as we searched for him, and also those who remembered Brian in their prayers,” said the statement.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course but the family said they expect it to be some time before Mr Farrell’s body is returned home to them.

“No further announcements will be made until then, and we respectfully ask that Brian’s friends and family be left in peace to mourn the loss of our son, our brother, our best friend,” they said.
