Gardaí have confirmed the body of a woman was discovered in the fast-flowing Owenmore river in Co Sligo on Thursday afternoon.

The alarm was raised at lunchtime when the woman was spotted in the river at Collooney.

The Coast Guard helicopter based at Strandhill joined the search along with local gardaí and members of the fire service.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that body of a middle-aged woman had been located and the operation to recover it was ongoing.

It is understood the body was located close to railway tracks on the old Galway road.
