Death of resident at Áras Attracta care home investigated

Age and identity of woman not yet known and file is being prepared for local coroner

Gardaí are investigating the death of a resident at the Áras Attracta care home in Mayo yesterday evening.

Gardaí confirmed an investigation is under way following the death which occurred at around 10pm on Sunday. The death is not said to be suspicious.

It has been reported that a female resident got into difficulty while trying to swallow a piece of food, and efforts by staff to help the woman were unsuccessful.

Emergency services were called to the care home and the woman was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The age and identity of the woman involved are not yet known and a file is being prepared for the local coroner.

The Áras Attracta care home has previously gained publicity after an undercover RTÉ investigation discovered instances of abuse of vulnerable patients by staff.

Five members of staff have been convicted following an investigation into the issues.

There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing in this case.
