Gardaí­ in Westport are investigating a fatal collision involving a cyclist and a car which occurred at Knockakeery, Aughagower, Co Mayo on Saturday.

At approximately 11.30am a 67-year-old male cyclist was fatally injured on a minor road at Knockakeery near the village of Aughagower, approximately five miles from Westport.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and later removed to Mayo General Hospital. The driver of the car, a female aged in her 40s, did not require hospital treatment.

The road is closed to traffic and local diversions are in place. An examination of the scene by Garda forensic collision investigators is continuing. The local Coroner has been notified.
