A man killed instantly in a crash outside Clonmel on Monday night has been named locally as Jake Anderson (21).

Mr Anderson, from Fernville in Clerihan, Co Tipperary, died when the Volkswagen Golf he was driving collided head-on with a truck in the townland of Ballingarrane shortly before 8pm.

Gardaí­ in Clonmel are trying to establish what caused the crash which happened on a wide, straight stretch of the N24, about a kilometre from the town.

The victim was travelling in the direction of Clonmel at the time and the truck was heading towards Cahir.

The truck driver, who is not from the local area, was brought by ambulance to South Tipperary General Hospital where he was treated for minor physical injuries and was also in shock in the aftermath of the incident.

Mr Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene and the coroner for South Tipperary was informed. He worked as an apprentice pipe-fitter.

The road where the crash happened was closed on Monday night to allow an examination by garda forensic collision investigators and motorists were diverted in the direction of Cashel.

Gardaí­ have appealed for witnesses to the crash to contact them at the station in Clonmel on 052-6177640 and are hoping that anyone with dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.
