Driver and passenger in truck not hospitalised after Friday evening crash

A 39-year-old man has died after the car he was driving collided with a pick-up truck in Co Westmeath on Friday evening.

The incident happened at about 5.30pm on the N55 at Tubberclare near Glasson, just outside Athlone.

The man was taken by ambulance to Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The driver of the truck, a man in his 20s, and a passenger in the truck who was in his late teens both sustained minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

There were no passengers in the car.

Garda forensic investigators examined the scene and the road has since reopened to traffic. A post-mortem examination has been arranged.
