Man (50s) dies in west Cork after getting into difficulty while swimming

A man in his 50s has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in Lough Hyne near Skibbereen in west Cork on Sunday afternoon.

The experienced swimmer is suspected to have had a heart attack while swimming with others.

Locals used a defibrillator at the pier while gardaí, the fire service and the Irish Community Air Ambulance were mobilised

While paramedics attended the scene at about 12.45pm and carried out CPR, he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

The man, who is reported to be a local businessman, was well-known locally.

The Garda Press Office said his body had since been taken to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital.
