Chances of white Christmas remote as dry weather and sunshine predicted for the 25th

Met Éireann has issued a rainfall warning for counties Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal with up to 50mm of rain forecast in the next 24 hours.

The yellow weather warning was issued at 6pm yesterday and is in place until 6am Tuesday morning.

Yellow weather warnings are issued for weather conditions that do not pose an immediate threat to the general population, but only to those exposed to risk by nature of their location or activity.

It will be mild today and on Tuesday with temperatures remaining at 10 to 12 degrees.

Those with their heart set on a white Christmas will be disappointed with dry weather and temperatures between 4 and 8 degrees forecast for both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

While there will be sunshine during the day, temperatures will drop below freezing on both nights as winds fall off and skies clear.

St Stephen’s Day will be dry to start with before rain develops from the West.
