A 22-year-old German tourist has been killed in a road traffic crash involving a car and a motorbike in west Cork.

He was one of two tourists travelling on motorbikes when he was involved in a collision with a car at Bauravilla on the Skibbereen to Drimoleague road about 5km from Skibbereen, at about 3.40pm.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car, a 19-year-old man from Skibbereen, was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital. His injuries are understood not to be life-threatening.

The second German tourist, a young woman, was travelling on a separate motorbike and was uninjured but was treated for shock.

Gardaí from Skibbereen closed off the road to allow a forensic crash investigator carry out a technical examination of the scene.

The body of the deceased was removed to Cork University Hospital for a postmortem while gardaí have notified the German authorities.
