A pilot escaped with just cuts and bruises when his microlight aircraft fell hundreds of feet and crash-landed on a Co Donegal island.

The pilot, a Brazilian man, lost the power in his engine when flying above Tory Island, some 15km off the mainland, on Monday at about 7pm.

Local people rushed to scene of the crash and saw the pilot emerge from the wreckage.

He was treated for superficial wounds but was able to leave the island later via ferry along with the remains of this aircraft, which were gathered by residents.

The King of Tory Island, Patsy Dan Rodgers, said he was pleased nobody was hurt in the incident.

“Half of the island didn’t even known anything had happened,” he said.
