A man charged with raping two women, whom he kept prisoner for two days, allegedly roamed the streets of Belfast at night seeking vulnerable people for sex, a court has heard

Orhan Kibar (41), from Claremont Street, was refused bail at Belfast Magistrates' Court, where he was charged with three counts of rape and false imprisonment, amid claims that relatives plan to help him flee to his native Turkey or Denmark.

He allegedly committed the offences after meeting the two women early on Saturday morning and taking them back to his apartment. The court heard the two women sustained bruising – one to her legs and arm and the other to the back of her head.

Opposing his release, a detective constable expressed fears Mr Kibar could offend again.

Traumatised

Defence counsel Seán O’Hare told the detective that Mr Kibar still does not know the full allegations against him because interviews with the complainants were yet to be completed. The detective said both were co-operating with police but one was too traumatised to go through an evidence process at the weekend.

Mr O’Hare said there was an issue around consent and that CCTV footage from the accused’s apartment block apparently shows Mr Kibar and the women going back to his apartment together.

The detective replied: “The injured parties would state they did go back to the apartment, but they certainly did not consent [to what happened].”

Mr Kibar was remanded in custody until December 20th.
