Gardaí broke into the home of elderly sisters in Cork  city early on Saturday  to discover them in a prone state, and suspect a case of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Two elderly sisters have been hospitalised in Cork with suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

Gardaí were called after relatives became concerned for the welfare of the sisters, aged 82 and 92.

They broke into the sisters' home early on Saturday on Blarney Street on the city's northside to discover the sisters in a prone state.

The sisters were said to be recovering after being rushed to Cork University Hospital, and were said to be in a comfortable condition.
