Death brings to eight the number killed on Irish roads since December 23rd

A teenager has been killed in a two-car crash in Co Offaly, bringing to eight the number killed on Irish roads since December 23rd.

The 19-year-old was the driver of one of the cars in the collision at 1.30pm on the R420 Tullamore to Portarlington Road at Geashill.

A passenger in the teenager's car was injured and taken by ambulance to the Midland Regional Hospital.

The driver of the other car was also injured and taken to hospital.

The road between Geashill and Clonygowan was closed on Tuesday evening to allow Garda forensic investigators to examine the scene.

Gardaí at Tullamore Garda station have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact them on 057-9327600 or via the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666111.

Road fatalities

The driver's death brings the number of road fatalities so far this year to 164, 30 fewer than over the same period in 2014.

However, the number of fatalities on Irish roads this month has made it one of the worst Decembers on record.
