The sleds are to continue gathering dust, according to a spokesman for Met Éireann, who said “a sprinkling of snow” is possible on high ground in the north west of the country, but the rest of the country will escape.

“It’s unlikely over the bulk of the country – probably not in the east or south,” he said.

“But later on tonight and at times during tomorrow there will be wintery showers coming into the north west of the country and those elevated places around there may get a dusting of snow.

“The showers will be a mixture of rain, hail and sleet. But it is cold enough for anywhere above 800 feet or so to get a light dusting. The showers in general won’t penetrate much further than the midlands or west of the country.

“A lot of the country tomorrow is actually going to be quite sunny even though it will be very cold,” he added.

Highest temperatures this afternoon range from 7 to 10 degrees, but it will turn much colder later tonight, with minimum temperatures ranging from 1 to 4 degrees. It will be very windy throughout the night.

Tomorrow will be cold and windy, with sunny spells and scattered showers.
