Several climbers were rescued from a Co Wicklow mountain cliff face last night after one member took a fall.

Three climbers were injured at Luggala Mountain yesterday. Emergency rescue services were called to the scene by the Garda .

One injured climber was airlifted to hospital at about 8pm and a second injured climber was walked off the top of the mountain by rescuers to safety.

Rescuers set up abseils to access an third climber who was potentially the most critically injured, the Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Team said in a statement. "In deteriorating weather conditions and darkness the third climber was lowered from cliff face in a stretcher and carried to an awaiting ambulance," the statement said.

Two other climbers were also helped down the cliff face while another group of three climbers was transported to the rescue base.

All casualties were handed over by rescue services to the HSE at about 1.30am.

Several emergency groups were involved in the rescue including: Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Team and Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team, the Irish Coast Guard, the Garda and the HSE ambulance service.
