Tribute paid to cyclist killed in Co Kildare crash

Tribute has been paid to cyclist Tonya McEvoy who died following a collision with a car in Co Kildare on Sunday morning.

Ms McEvoy, who was in her 30s, was on a training ride with Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club at the time of the collision with a car at Rathcoffey.

A statement from the club said that Ms McEvoy “started as one of our talented beginner women last summer” and took to the sport “with a passion”.

The club said that Ms McEvoy was “on the bike every weekend she could, from the Wicklow 100 to the Tour of Meath to the Great Dublin Bike Ride.”

Her sister told the club that “cycling was a big part of her life and she loved every minute of it. She was so proud to be a part of Orwell Wheelers and wearing the colours.”

Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club member Declan Quigley said that Ms McEvoy was “great company”, had a “sunny disposition” and “immediately fitted in with the group and brought great energy and enthusiasm to the spins.”

The club offered their condolensces to Ms McEvoy’s parents Pat and Brian, her brothers Brian and Keith and her sister Ciara.

Members of the club were cycling through the Rathcoffey area when the incident occurred.

The man driving the car, who was in his late 20s, was unhurt.

Ms McEvoy’s remains were taken to Naas General Hospital for a postmortem.
