Two men arrested in connection with death of man after car theft

Two men have been arrested in relation to the death of a man who died in Dublin last month after trying to prevent the theft of his car.

Ian McDonnell, who was in his 50s, suffered catastrophic injuries during the incident, which took place near the car dealership he managed in Clondalkin.

Mr McDonnell was found seriously injured on the Robinhood Road at about 6.15pm on Sunday, January 23rd.

Gardaí said that he intervened to prevent the theft of the car, and was carried some distance on its bonnet to the place where he was found.

The father of three died at Tallaght University Hospital five days later.

Mr McDonnell lived in Lucan but his funeral took place in his native Elphin in Co Roscommon on February 8th.

Two men, both in their 20s, were arrested in connection to the incident on Wednesday.

They are currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Garda stations in the south west Dublin area.

Gardaí said their investigations are ongoing.
