An Irishman has died and a second man has been seriously injured in a car crash in France. Ian Corcoran (40), from Kilrush, Co Clare, was killed in the single-vehicle crash in the French Alps early on Sunday. Another Irishman (29), who was thrown from the car, remains in a serious condition in hospital.
The crash happened at about 2am at Verchaix near Samoëns, about 10km from the Swiss border. The car in which Mr Corcoran was travelling is reported to have left the road and struck a tree. The name of the injured man, who is not believed to be from Co Clare, has not been released. He was thrown from the car on impact and taken to hospital in Sallanches. Mr Corcoran died at the scene.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the incident and officials are providing consular assistance to families of Mr Corcoran and the injured man.
Mr Corcoran lived in Kilrush for many years before moving to the US. He returned to Ireland for a time and is understood to have run a pub in Kilrush for a time before moving to France.
