Aiwo - The tiny Pacific island of Nauru yesterday agreed to take a further 237 illegal immigrants off Australia's hands in exchange for fuel and other incentives in a deal which Australia says sends a message to people-smugglers.

The Australian navy had boarded an Indonesian ship over the weekend and transferred its passengers to a troop carrier already laden with asylum-seekers being sent to Nauru and New Zealand.
