The village of Ballylongford, Co Kerry, was last night preparing for serious flooding forecast for the weekend.
Four years ago, the coastal village suffered damage worth hundreds of thousands of euro when spring tides combined with high winds to wreak havoc.
Local Fine Gael councillor Liam Purtill yesterday called on the Office of Public Works (OPW) to bring in long-term measures to tackle what was a growing problem.
There have been two major floods in the past six years. Two weeks ago water reached manhole covers and sewers flooded. Last March the town was also threatened.
"Emergency funding is only available when the damage is done - we need remedial measures to prevent the kind of hardship families and businesses suffered here four years ago," said Mr Purtill.
A recent survey found that flooding was one of the issues of greatest importance to the vast majority of the town's 405 residents, and most felt that a proper map of the village's sewers and drains was needed.
Mr Purtill said many elderly people living alone on Sand Quay and Bridge Street were particularly anxious this weekend.
Meanwhile Kerry County Council issued a warning yesterday to all low-lying coastal areas, saying landowners should ensure drains are cleared.
