London - Labour has won the Leeds Central by-election - but with a vastly reduced majority. Mr Hilary Benn, the son of the Labour MP, Mr Tony Benn, won the seat, which was left vacant due to the sudden death of the foreign office minister, Mr Derek Fatchett, last month, by 6,361 votes.

It gave the Labour Party a majority of 2,293 compared with the 20,689 majority at the last General Election.
