A pensioner has died after being struck on the head during a robbery yesterday evening in Belfast city centre.

The man (67) was mugged near Ann Street at about 5.30pm, close to the Mermaid bar, and died later in hospital.

His attacker has been described as a man aged between 30 and 40; with dark, thin hair; of heavy build; and five feet, 11 inches in height. He was wearing a beige jacket and blue jeans.

The victim's wallet was taken during the robbery, which police believe could be linked to another similar attack on an 85-year-old man.

He was attacked and robbed at Winecellar Entry near the Monaco bar off High Street at about the same time.

The 85-year-old was also hit on the side of the head.
