Roads around Downing Street in London were closed for more than an hour this morning after a man attacked the security gates with a sledgehammer.

Police said they arrested a man around 5.20 a.m. for criminal damage and took him to a central London police station, where he remains in custody.

Whitehall was closed between Parliament Square and Horse Guards Parade for an hour while police searched the area around Prime Minister Tony Blair's official residence.
