A 27-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death of a Polish national, who died following an incident at a house in Limerick on Easter Monday morning.
Waldemar Mateja, also a native of Poland, with an address at Cois Ghruada, Castletroy, Limerick, is charged with intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Dariusz Wiskowski at 19, The Hawthorns, Brierfield, Castletroy, on April 9th last.
Mr Wiskowski died at the MidWestern Regional Hospital in Limerick last Monday morning several hours after he was found at a house party with serious head injuries.
Four men and one woman, all Lithuanian or Polish nationals, were arrested this week in connection with the 26-year-old's death. Mr Mateja appeared before Judge Tom O'Donnell at Limerick District Court yesterday evening, where he was charged in connection with the incident.
The court heard from Det Insp Declan Mulcahy that the accused replied "no" when he was formally charged at Henry Street Garda station yesterday.
Judge O'Donnell was also told that the State was objecting to bail and seeking that the accused be remanded in custody because he was a foreign national living in Ireland for a number of years but with no ties to the jurisdiction. Det Insp Mulcahy also pointed out that there was a "major fear factor" among witnesses in the case.
Solicitor John Herbert, who was appointed to represent the defendant, said he was reserving his position on bail. Judge O'Donnell remanded Mr Mateja in custody until April 18th next, when he is due to appear before Limerick District Court again.
