A man (34) arrested on Sunday tonight appeared at Dublin's Special Criminal Court where he was charged with membership of the INLA.

Declan Duffy, a native of Armagh City, with an address at Hanover Street West, Dublin 8, was charged with membership of an illegal organisation styling itself the Irish National Liberation Army, otherwise the INLA on June 22nd.

He had been arrested as part of a Garda Special Branch investigation into INLA activity in Dublin.

Detective Sergeant Marilyn Brosnan, of the Special Detective Unit, Harcourt Square, gave evidence of arresting Mr Duffy this evening at 6.51pm at Blackrock for the purpose of charging him before the Special Criminal Court.

Det Sgt Brosnan said that she believed that Mr Duffy was a member of an unlawful organisation on June 22nd. She said that when he was cautioned Mr Duffy replied: "I am not a member of any illegal organisation."

When he was told that the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed that he be charged before the Special Criminal Court, he again replied:“I am not a member of any illegal organisation.’’

The court remanded him in custody until Thursday.
