A Larne man appeared in court at Ballymena, Co Antrim, yesterday charged with two counts of attempted murder following an outbreak of violence on a housing estate in the east Antrim town earlier this week.
Mr Robert Francis Shaw (37), Elizabeth Avenue, was remanded in custody to Larne Magistrates' Court on Friday next.
His solicitor said an application for bail would be made in the High Court.
A detective who gave evidence of arrest said he saw the accused at Ballymena RUC station on Wednesday. After being charged and cautioned, Mr Shaw replied: "No" to each charge.
Mr Shaw's legal representative told the court that during interviews with police his client had provided an alibi for his whereabouts at the time of the alleged offences. An independent witness had made a statement confirming the alibi, it was claimed.
Replying to the solicitor's allegation that there were "glaring inconsistencies" in the statements of witnesses, the detective said "there was some difference of opinion" in statements.
