Gardaí in Dublin are investigating the fatal stabbing of a man in Walkinstown late last night.

The man (42), a father of two from Dublin, was stabbed in a lane off Beechfield Road at about 9pm. He was taken to St James's hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

It was reported that the man had attempted to drive his car down the lane but found it blocked by another vehicle, and that he was stabbed four times in the head and body.

Gardaí searches this morning are reported to have recovered a blood-stained machine pistol, leading them to believe there may have been a "drop off" or some other criminality in the lane before the stabbing.

Initial reports suggested the stabbing may have been road-rage related, but gardaí have said the discovery of the gun means they are not ruling out that it was a row between people involved in criminal activity.

The State Pathologist is to carry out a postmortem today, and gardaí have asked any witnesses to contact Crumlin station.
