A man who assaulted a judge outside a court was fined £2,000 yesterday at Clonmel Circuit Court. The assault was on District Judge Joseph Mangan during a lunch recess at Cashel District Court last March.

Mr Michael Power jnr, of Spa Field Crescent, Cashel, appeared on a count of contempt of court.

Imposing the £2,000 fine, Judge Kevin Haugh said people could not think they could go about assaulting any person employed in the policing of the judicial process.

The court was told Mr Power was upset with a decision the judge had made in relation to his brother and "pushed, shoved, or hit him a thump, causing Judge Mangan to be dizzy for a few seconds and feel generally unwell."

Mr Power pleaded guilty to the offence.
