A 35-year-old east Clare man will today apply for bail after being charged in connection with one of the biggest drugs hauls in the State this year.
At a special sitting of Ennis District Court on Saturday, Thomas Lennon, Killestry, Killaloe, faced four separate charges arising from a National Drugs Unit and Clare gardaí drugs seizure at Killaloe shortly after 10am on Friday.
Mr Lennon was arrested when gardaí stopped a van containing the drugsthat he was driving on the road linking Killaloe to O'Brien's Bridge.
He is charged with having ecstasy and cannabis in his possession for the purpose of selling or supplying to another in contravention of the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 1988.
Giving evidence of arrest, charge and caution, Det Garda Edel Kennedy told the court that she charged Mr Lennon with the various charges at Killaloe Garda station at 10.05am on Saturday.
Det Garda Kennedy said that in response, Mr Lennon made no reply.
Solicitor for Mr Lennon, Ted McCarthy, said he would reserve the question of a bail application for Killaloe District Court today.
Insp Tom Kennedy applied for Mr Lennon to be remanded in custody and Judge Joseph Mangan acceded to that request, remanding Mr Lennon in custody to today's court in Killaloe.
