An Englishman who bit off portion of a partially sighted man's left ear has been jailed for three years and barred from Ireland for 20 years. Judge Cyril Kelly was told the victim had to have surgery on his other ear to balance his appearance and may have to have several more operations on his afflicted ear.

Kevin Cameron (35), a father of one daughter, of South Shields, Newcastle, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assault occasioning actual bodily harm on May 6th, 1995.

Judge Kelly said Cameron had to be taught a lesson by being jailed in view of his history of violent criminal offences. The sentence would be suspended from December 23rd. "It would cost £700 a week to keep him in prison here and why should I waste the taxpayers' money that way?"
