A man was killed this morning in a crash in Co Down.

The collision between a white Mercedes van and a lorry happened shortly after 9am on the Ardglass Road outside Downpatrick.

A second man has been taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries.

The deceased was named as Jimmy Taylor (58) from Lurgan.

SDLP Assemblywoman Margaret Ritchie said the road was a "death trap" and called for an independent inquiry.

"This is the latest in a spate of accidents on this part of the Ardglass Road," she said. "It is a tragedy for the family and friends of the man who lost his life."

Before Christmas there was another accident on the Ardglass Road that led to extensive damage being caused to two properties after two lorries slid out of control.

"There now appears to be a very significant risk factor linked to one of the busiest roads in the Down area," she added. "I am now calling for an independent inquiry to be carried out into all of the circumstances surrounding the building of the road, including the materials used and the general design."
