Thomas Moran, in his mid-twenties, from O'Malley Park, was found dead next to a burnt out house in the Southill area of the city.

His body has been taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital for a full post mortem examination by State Pathologist Marie Cassidy.

Detectives said they are keeping an open mind about a motive for the murder until the results of the examination are made known.

However, it is not believed the death was linked to an ongoing feud in the city between warring gangs. The victim was known to gardai for small scale crimes including petty theft and burglary.

"He certainly wasn't a big time player," a garda source said. Reports the man had suffered a gunshot wound have yet to be confirmed.

His body was discovered on waste ground at Ash Avenue, John Carew Park, at 1.45am, when emergency services attended a fire at an empty house at the end of the avenue.

The area was sealed off for examination by a crime scene team from the Garda Technical Bureau. Detectives were carrying out house to house inquiries in the housing estate as part of their investigation.

Inspector Gerard McNamara, based at Limerick's Roxboro Road Garda Station, appealed for anyone with information to get in contact. ends
