A South African man went on a shooting spree after having a row with his girfriend, killing her and nine others before taking his own life.

The killings happened in the city of East London when Bulelani Vukwane, aged 29, shot dead his girlfriend, Nolunuyo Mbenya, after a row on Saturday night. He then went to her parent’s home and killed a further three people including her father.

He then indiscriminately shot several members of the public after driving away from the house in his car.

Police eventually confronted Vukwane before he turned a gun on himself.

South Africa is scarred by sky-high rates of violent crime, fuelled by vast income disparities and wretched poverty.

The murder rate has fallen from 50.9 per 100,000 people in 1994 to 33 per 100,000 in the first nine months of last year, according to police statistics.
