A Polish man was in a stable condition in hospital last night following a stabbing incident in Cavan town at the weekend, which left three men injured.
The incident took place at about 3am on Saturday morning when the man and his two friends - all Polish nationals - were set upon by a group as they walked home to their house in Ardkeen.
All three received injuries and were rushed to Cavan General Hospital. Two of the men were later released, while a third who was in a critical condition was transferred to the intensive care unit at St James's Hospital in Dublin. His condition was yesterday said to be stable.
Gardaí in Cavan were unable to confirm the nationality of their attackers and have speculated that it may have been a random assault. Language barriers are understood to have made it difficult to make progress.
Insp Gerry Curley said gardaí were following up a number of leads and have appealed for any witnesses to contact Cavan Garda station at 049-4368800.
Cavan town has a sizeable Polish community, many of whom work in the agriculture and meat industry.
One Polish woman said there was little sign of tension either with Irish nationals, or within the community.
