A man carrying a firearm in his hand baggage has been arrested at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.

The weapon was found during a check of the man's hand baggage after he passed through passport control, a police spokesman said.

Air Malta said in a statement the man was Maltese and was heading to Malta aboard one of its flights.

After the suspect's arrest, all other passengers on the flight were checked again, causing a 50-minute delay, the company said.

The police spokesman said the man was in custody and an investigation under way.
