A sports management company is to take over the running of Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre, which opened last year at a cost of €16 million but quickly ran into difficulty, Killarney Town Council has announced.

The centre is mostly State- funded and had received strong backing from John O’Donoghue during his tenure as minister for sport. It also had the backing of a majority of the town council against the advice of the council management and local chamber of commerce, which pointed out that the town had more than enough private pools open to the public.

SP Sports Management will take over the leisure centre on February 1st and will run it for six years.
