Raiders tied up a security man and took a substantial sum of cash from Dundalk greyhound stadium early yesterday morning.

The stadium had closed for the night when four masked men broke into the premises on Racecourse Road at 2.30am. A Garda spokesman said the raiders confronted the security man and tied him up. They then spent some time at the stadium before they left with an undisclosed sum of money after 4am.

The raiders left in a grey or silver car, with a Dublin 05 registration. Gardaí think it may have been a Ford Mondeo. The men headed south towards Dublin on the old Dundalk/Ardee Road.

The security man was treated for shock at Louth County Hospital but it is understood that he was not physically injured.

The stadium has been a very popular venue since it was officially re-opened in February of last year, after an €1.5 million investment.

It has a restaurant, three bars, a fast-food outlet and two hospitality suites, so its takings for the night would have been substantial. The stadium opens on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and is particularly popular with corporate groups.

It hosted 12 races on Saturday night, with the last one starting at about 10.20pm. Post-race entertainment was provided in one of the bars before the crowds dispersed.
