Protests against the resumption of work at the controversial Shell terminal in north Mayo passed off peacefully this morning.

Protests against the resumption of work at the controversial Shell terminal in north Mayo passed off peacefully this morning.

Several dozen protesters gathered at the site at around 6am, but there was no repeat of angry scenes yesterday when gardaí removed protesters who had staged sit-down protests along the route.

Superintendent Joe Gannon said the Garda operation "ran like clockwork".
