Met Éireann has warned of further flash flooding overnight after heavy rains caused havoc throughout the country this weekend with residents evacuated from their homes in several parts and emergency services inundated with calls.
The North, the Midlands and Kilkenny were among the worst hit regions.
Several roads, including the M4 between Maynooth and Kilcock were impassable due to heavy flooding. Sandbags were handed out to residents in parts of Co Wicklow, with further flooding feared there during tonight’s high tide.
The residents of up to 200 apartments in Co Carlow were temporarily stranded after the River Barrow burst its banks leaving the surrounding area under some three feet of water.
Dublin City Council said its crisis management team was on standby to put in place whatever measures are needed.
A meeting of senior civil servants in the North took place at Stormont today to review the situation and discuss the Executive’s response.
The North's Fire Service said today it would take at least 24 hours to clear the Broadway underpass road in Belfast which was submerged under 15ft of water. A number of cars are thought to be abandoned under the newly-built underpass.
Numerous major roads across the island were closed to traffic while a train derailed in Co Laois after downpours there sparked a landslide onto the track.
The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service had to help people from their homes in Belfast and counties Down, Armagh and Antrim, with over 850 emergency calls received.
A spokesman for the RNLI added: “Volunteer lifeboat crew at Newcastle RNLI assisted with evacuating people from their homes on August 16 during the heavy rain and flooding in Northern Ireland.
“Eleven members of the lifeboat crew took the D class inshore lifeboat Aldergove II and went door to door in the Bryansford Road area of Newcastle, County Down, to ensure that residents were safe amid rising flood waters.
Several sporting fixtures on both sides of the Border had to be called off.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland said rivers had burst their banks, two bridges collapsed and 37 major roads were shut down throughout the day.
Met Éireann has issued a severe weather warning which is valid until Monday. It forecast outbreaks of rain this evening would clear early tonight. However, later in the night more heavy rain will develop over the south of the country, it said.
