The national minimum wage will be increased from €8.30 to €8.65 from this Sunday July 1st.
Minister for Labour Affairs Billy Kelleher TD announced the rise today. It is the second increase to the minimum wage this year, following an increase in January this year.
Overall, this is the sixth time the minimum wage has been increased since the National Minimum Wage Act became law in April 2000.
The increase in the minimum wage applies to all employees whether full or part time, temporary or casual.
It is a criminal offence for an employer to pay an employee less than his/her minimum wage entitlement under the National Minimum Wage Act.
The national minimum wage applies to all "experienced adult workers" other than close relatives of the employer, apprentices as defined by the Industrial Training Act, 1967 and the Labour Services Act 1987 - including apprentice printers, bricklayers, mechanics, plumbers, carpenters and electricians.
An "experienced adult worker" is defined as one who is not under 18 years of age, or in the first two years after the date of first employment over the age of 18, or a trainee.
