A grandmother was today charged with two further counts of concealing the birth of a child following the discovery of babies' remains in two attics in Wales earlier this year.

Ann Mahoney (63) was charged today when she appeared via videolink at Merthyr Magistrates Court. She did not enter a plea.

The former nurse had already been charged with trying to conceal the birth of a child contrary to Section 60 of the Offences Against the Person Act following the discovery of remains at an address in Merthyr last March.

An investigation began when the body of a baby was found in a suitcase in the attic of a house where Ms Mahoney formerly lived in Penyfan Terrace, Merthyr Tydfil. Two other babies were found in the attic of a house in nearby Forsythia Drive, where she was living.

Another house in nearby Crab Apple Close, where Ms Mahoney lived for 34 years, was searched by a police team, but no other remains were found.

She had been bailed to a hostel in Birmingham "for her own protection" and ordered to stay out of Wales unless appearing before the courts.

The next hearing will be on August 26th, and Ms Mahoney's bail terms were extended to that date.
