The son of a former Sinn Féin election candidate, who was injured in a gun attack last year, is recovering after an early morning shooting in Limerick city yesterday.
Karl Shapland, who is in his mid-20s, was injured in his upper arm and wrist when shots were fired into his home at Pineview Gardens, Moyross, at 12.30am yesterday.
The victim is the son of former Sinn Féin election candidate Jenny Shapland, who unsuccessfully contested the Limerick East byelection in 1998, following the death of Labour TD Jim Kemmy,
Last October, Ms Shapland was also injured in a shooting when she was targeted by a gunman while walking with a 15-year-old boy in the Delmege Park area of Moyross.
In July of last year, her other son, Shane Shapland (25), was jailed for five years for shooting at three gardaí.
The Shapland home was also targeted last autumn when a petrol bomb was thrown into the downstairs sitting room. Nobody was injured in the attack.
Gardaí believe the attacks are part of a localised feud in the Moyross area, which is not connected to a wider Limerick feud.
Meanwhile, an 18-year-old youth was in Garda custody last night after a second firearm was seized in Limerick city in 24 hours.
A sawn-off shotgun and 40 rounds of ammunition were seized following a search of a house in Pineview Gardens, Moyross yesterday.
The previous day a French shotgun and €5,000 worth of heroin were found when gardaí searched a car they stopped on Old Cratloe Road at 1.30pm.
A 27-year-old Moyross man appeared in court yesterday charged with possession of the shotgun. Both searches were carried out under Operation Anvil, according to a Garda spokeswoman.
