Tennis: British number one Andy Murray raced into the second round of the Australian Open courtesy of a devastating 6-0 6-0 6-1 victory over Spain's Alberto Martin.

The pair had never met before today's encounter in Melbourne and, on this evidence, the man from Barcelona will not want to see the Scot again for some time.

Murray was surprised how comfortable a ride he was given by Martin.

"It was pretty easy. I was expecting a tough match,'' he said. "But it gave me a chance to play my shots and I thought I played pretty smart. When I got the opportunity, I went for it and I was pretty happy with the way I played.''

Murray admitted he was fortunate his match was moved indoors after play was suspended on the outside courts because of the searing heat in Melbourne.

"I was supposed to play at 7.30pm but, because of the heat, I got changed and I was pretty happy as it is not as hot and the conditions indoors probably suited me more than they did Alberto,'' he said.

"I just hope my opponents have long matches outside.''

Next up for Murray will be either another Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco, or Paul-Henri Mathieu, of France.
