Tennis: Andy Murray beat Fernando Verdasco in straight sets to reach the third round of the Australian Open.
The Scot was not at his best but still managed a 7-6 (7/4) 7-5 6-4 win at Melbourne Park. He will now face Juan Ignacio Chela, the Argentine who beat him in the first round here last year.
Fifth seed James Blake recovered from a poor start to record a convincing straight-sets win over fellow American Alex Kuznetsov.
Blake hit back from 3-0 down in the first set to record a 6-4 6-1 6-2 victory. He next faces either Mischa Zverev or compatriot Robby Ginepri, with a fourth-round meeting with home hope Lleyton Hewitt also on the horizon.
Hewitt was a four-set winner over Canada's Frank Dancevic. Tomas Berdych (13) also booked his place in the third round with a 6-3 6-2 6-4 victory over Robert Smeets, but 17th seed Jarkko Nieminen crashed out to Juan Ignacio Chela.
In the women's competition, fourth seed Kim Clijsters produced another impressive display to book her place in the third round, with a convincing 6-3 6-0 victory over Akiko Morigami.
The 23-year-old, who has announced she will retire at the end of the season, will face either Virginie Razzano or Alona Bondarenko in the third round.
Sixth seed Martina Hingis, who eased through her first-round tie with a 6-0 6-2 victory over Nathalie Dechy, also had few problems in her second match - disposing of Alla Kudryavtseva 6-2 6-2 on the Vodafone Arena. Hingis will face Japan's Aiko Nakamura in the next round.
Anna Chakvetadze (12), Ana Ivanovic (13) and Daniela Hantuchova (15) all needed three sets to progress, but progress they did - unlike 17th seed Anna-Lena Groenefeld who bowed out to Ashley Harkleroad. Ninth seed Dinara Safina had no such problems, easing to a 6-3 6-2 victory against Youlia Fedossova. PA
